The first middle grade fiction sports book for kids I wrote is titled THE DAY I HIT A HOME RUN AT GREAT AMERICAN BALL PARK and is based on my dream when in 1969 I dreamed of one day hitting a home run at the Cincinnati Reds ballpark. The book received great reviews from celebrity figures like Kim Nuxhall, Tom Browning, and Ted Powers. And then schools in Cincinnati started calling on me to speak about my boyhood sports dream.

The Reds book became so popular that I was asked to speak in Iowa about my kids sports books. After my speech at Iowa’s State Reading conference I was asked if I might write a book for children from Iowa using a similar theme of hard work, belief in yourself, and family values to help inspire children to believe in dreams. I asked the president and general manager of the Iowa Cubs if it would be okay to write a book about a young boy who dreams of hitting a home run at Principal Park where the Iowa Cubs play. The general manager thought it was a great idea and I have now traveled over 40,000 miles in Iowa, spoken to over a 150,000 students in Iowa about dreams and my THE DAY I HIT A HOME RUN AT PRINCIPAL PARK is one of the best-selling middle grade fiction sports books written specifically for kids in Iowa.

Because of the demand for local middle grade sports books, I am ready to launch a Yankees book titled THE LAST AT-BAT AT YANKEE STADIUM, a Bulls book titled STAND O AT DURHAM BULLS ATHLETIC PARK, a Rangers book titled BASES LOADED AT RANGERS BALLPARK IN ARLINGTON, a Las Vegas 51s book titled HIGH ROLLING AT CASHMAN FIELD.

Sports enthusiast of all ages will enjoy reading these coming-of-age sports books. As one parent who reviewed the baseball story wrote to me: Talk about déjà vu in stereo! On the one hand I’m reading The Day I Hit a Home Run at Great American Ball Park and on the other I am reliving memories of my sandlot baseball days in junior high on the heavily-treed school yard lot. I had intended to scan the book to see if my nephew would enjoy Paul Mullen’s book but got so enthralled with my own days on the diamond that I finished the book before reaching for my now-cold coffee.

I enjoy hearing your words of encouragement and have included some words of praise from sports enthusiast who enjoy reading a good baseball yarn about their favorite baseball team.

“Building character through America’s greatest pastime is what Fuji exemplifies. This is a story that young readers will certainly enjoy and relate to.” —Kim Nuxhall, Director of The Joe Nuxhall Character Education Fund

“This book fully captures the allure that is baseball and Great
American Ball Park. It’s a fun and relevant story that fans of all ages can enjoy.” —Dann Stupp, Author, Opening Day at Great American Ball Park Co-author, Tom Browning’s Tales from the Reds Dugout

“Like a tied, seventh game of the World Series, this delightful story draws you to the very edge of your seat in anticipation of what might happen next. Bravo, Paul Mullen!” —John Erardi, Cincinnati sports writer and author of Opening Day: Celebrating Cincinnati’s Baseball Holiday

“I appreciate the story for its detail of a young boy coming-of-age as a player and as a person. The setting of Cincinnati and Great American Ball Park is, if I may say, perfect.” —Tom Browning, Cincinnati Reds 1984 – 1994

Fuji’s character seemed real, genuine, and alive. The baseball scenes were believable – often a difficult task for a novelist. —Tom Eckle, Editor of Spitball magazine & prestigious Casey Award for distinguished baseball books.

Every fan who has dreamed of one day playing in a major league stadium will appreciate this book. Recommend read for middle grade sports book readers – Charlotte Decker, Cincinnati Public Library Silver Gertie Award winner and founder of Reviewers of Young
